Family caregivers are supporting people living with dementia for a decade or longer. Recognizing changes throughout this long disease can feel like detective work. Award-winning occupational therapist and dementia care specialist, Heather McKay, will present a seminar focused on the 5 stages of dementia progression and strategies that work to support people in the difficult middle stages. This session will emphasize the value of matching helping behaviors to the person’s needs and retained abilities to promote a sense of control and self-direction in the middle stages of dementia. Participants will learn effective communication strategies and hands-on techniques for helping with personal care, reducing resistance to care and making participation easier and safer for themselves and the person in middle-stage dementia.

Please RSVP By Tuesday, June 1st

A Song From the Past

My aunt had played piano beautifully, but for the past decade she wouldn’t touch the keys. Dementia limited her attention span, so getting her interested in anything has been challenging for herand for us. But Wayne, one of her Artis Life Enrichment Assistants, never gave up. Since she would never come over to the piano, Wayne decided to bring the piano to her! He rolled it over, started tapping the keys and spoke to her about her years of playing. Within minutes, she slowly began to play beautiful musicfrom memory! Everyone was astonished. Now she eagerly plays with another resident for audiences at Artis. Our family is overjoyed!
